Stirring words on a milestone birthday

Back in 2023, I shared some words from another Kevin - Kevin Conroy, best known as the man who voiced Batman.  He did so for decades until his unfortunate passing in 2022; for many, myself included, Kevin was the definitive Batman.  In that particular blog, I quoted from a YouTube video where Conroy was giving his sentiments about Batman.  I cannot find the video that I quoted from that day, it’s like it never existed, even though it obviously did at one point, but this makes his words all the more precious to me personally.

I bring this up now because I stated in that blog in 2023 that I had gone through some storms.  It’s true, but the storms I’ve seen these past few months almost make me forget altogether about the pain of the storms of 2023.  So much so, I’ve decided to bring up Kevin Conroy’s words on suffering and pain on my 45th birthday.  His words helped me in 2022/2023 and they did in 2026, so here they are again:

“What distinguishes [Batman] is that no matter what life throws at him, no matter what crisis, or challenge, or failure, he never lets it crush him…he takes that pain that life throws at him and he turns into something positive.  And he gives it back to the world as love.  Because his whole mission is to leave the world better than he found it...Everybody on this planet stumbles at one time or another, but that’s not what defines us.  What defines us is how we get back up, and learn from our mistakes, and get back into life and contribute. You have no control over what fate throws at you…life throws curveballs at everybody.  But what you do control is how you react to those curveballs; you can let them crush you and make you bitter, or you can learn from them, and take that knowledge and get back into life.”

Some may think it is silly for me to bring this up on my birthday, but so be it.  Kevin Conroy’s Batman inspired me before I could even articulate that I was a superhero fan.  For example, Robin, Batman’s protégé and partner, once said to Conroy’s Batman that the most important lesson he taught him was to never give up.  I second that for myself.
